Planning audiovisual mediatized experiences: The possible contributions from Audiovisual Design

Daniel Gambaro, Valdecir Becker

Abstract. The present essay contributes to a possible discussion on how to plan the experiences an individual can have during the fruition of content through complex audiovisual systems. In this stage of society’s deep mediatization, audiovisual producers are required a new approach to – and profound understanding of – the media spaces where content is distributed and consumed. According to the level of interaction of people with the media systems, these apparatuses some- times become an indissociable part of everyday experience. Thus, it is fundamental to discuss the complexity of experience as a concept that addresses the set of events and relationships, in a given environment, that people undergo and feel, as part of the processes of interpretation and assimilation. This paper proposes that, depending on their intentions, producers must consider their productions as part of the environment in which the audience is and, therefore, plan and promote experiences to intensify how those individuals appropriate the content. We first present a broad and adequate definition of experience, followed by how it can be applied to the theory of Audiovisual Design, a theoretical-methodological set create to assess the planning and the analysis of complex audiovisual systems.

Sharing and visualizing audiovisual collective memories – experts review on the concept of a participatory platform

Ana Velhinho, Pedro Almeida

Abstract. Technology can be designed to strengthen the participatory culture and giving a voice to people through User-Generated Content (UGC). Such practices may also influence the way we engage with places and communities. In this regard, we propose the conceptualization of an online platform to pro- mote participation and preserve audiovisual records of shared place-based experiences. Historic memories attached to places and cultural events, such as con- certs, traditional celebrations and visits to landmarks and exhibitions, are frequently captured on multimedia records, which are often shared online by those who experienced them. The aggregation of these audiovisual resources, in a participatory platform, may enhance these experiences through forms of presentation based on multiple perspectives, making them collective. Hence, the conceptualization of a digital platform that allows the creation of a living collaborative archive that preserves the uniqueness of each resource, but, in addition, al- lows an overview of the other participants’ contributions, was presented to experts within the areas of archives, museology, heritage, ethnography, community projects, cultural events, design, participatory media and digital platforms. We aimed to gather insights through exploratory interviews. This paper elaborates on the results of such interviews and summarizes strategies for collection, visualization and participation suggested by the experts, which are guiding the development of a prototype in the context of a PhD research.

Claudia Chantal Arduini Amaya

Tatiane Mateus

Abstract.
